What We Believe ...
We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that it shows us what God is like and what he expects of us. We also believe that Jesus Christ became the Word of God in a body, and that we should accept and follow his teaching.
So what did he teach?
Firstly, he taught some things about himself. He said he was “the Way, the Truth, and the Life”. He said, “I and the Father are one”, identifying himself with the God of the universe. He called himself Lord and urged people to follow him.
Then, he taught some things about us. He said that if we want to follow him we must first be ‘born again’. This involves repenting (which means to change the direction of our lives) and believing (putting our trust in) Jesus.
Thirdly, he taught how we can live a life pleasing to God. His famous sermon on the mount – addressing issues like anger, relationships, promises, giving, prayer, and anxiety – is just one notable example. He did, of course, teach a lot more than this!
Baptist Union Declaration of Principle
As a member of the Baptist Union, Pulborough Brooks Baptist Church subscribes to the Union’s Declaration of Principle:
  • That our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, is the sole and absolute authority in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures, and that each church has liberty, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to interpret and administer his laws.
  • That Christian Baptism is the immersion in water into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, of those who have professed repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ who ‘died for our sins according to the Scriptures; was buried, and rose again on the third day’.
  • That it is the duty of every disciple to bear personal witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelization of the world.
